Bobby Jindal and the legend of Dussehra

At 36, Bobby Jindal becomes the youngest governor of an American state.

"The only colors that will matter in the end are red, white and blue...", said Jindal famously during his election campaign. The abusive, below-the-belt campaigns of his much wiser and much wealthier white opponents, laced with filthy personal attacks ("Jindal leaves dirty dishes in the sink...") remind us of the astounding electoral victory of Sonia Gandhi in India amid similar gutter attacks against her foreign origins, her religion, her accent, her food habits and so on.

Such classic victories against all odds (particularly, Jindal, who does not even own a famous surname like Sonia's) are first of all a tight slap in the face of those immature human beings who have not grown up beyond the age-old paranoia of race, caste, religion and origins.

An evolved society must be a dispassionate meritocracy. And to achieve that grade of a society, the first pre-requisite is that you must be able to respect your opponent if your opponent is worthy of it. If you have self-respect, you will also have respect for others. Like Alexander the Great, who behaved like a true winner -- as well as Porus, who lost but did not fail to admire his enemy's superior skills.

Though in real life, it is easier said than done. An unhappy society is incapable of remaining unemotional and fair. While it is difficult to appreciate others, it is almost impossible to appreciate one's competitors. The unfairness and injustice in the society begins from the individual.

Every small victory like Bobby Jindal's or Sonia Gandhi's, is a thumping victory of humanity over narrow-mindedness. It is a reaffirmation that goodness of man still prevails over his wickedness. Just like Ram's victory over Ravan. Or so says the legend.
